We start the preparatory work

You need to approach any work with knowledge of the matter. Especially when it comes to something new that has never been done before.

Attention: The most important thing is that the plane after preparation is smooth and clean. After all, all that remains after applying the dye may well begin to peel off. Therefore, do everything with quality.

  • So, you plan to work with chipboard. The material is good, but before starting work, you need to prepare the surface on which you are going to apply a certain layer of paint. The quality of the work done depends on how the surface is prepared.
  • There is a very specific and understandable task - you need upgrade furniture made from chipboard, to give it novelty, to renew, so that there are no sins of old age of your favorite interior item. In such cases, for restoration work, two materials are selected: paint or special varnish. In some cases, these incompatible materials can be combined.
  • If you do not clean the surface, then no matter how hard you try, after a certain amount of time, the paint will begin to rise, peel and crumble to the floor. The paint will just start to run away from the painted surface.

Therefore, the surface of the chipboard must be thoroughly cleaned of the old varnish (see How to remove varnish from a tree: ways of doing work) or paint. The work is not simple, it requires perseverance and patience. Even if everything is at hand, it is not always possible to easily tear off a piece of old varnish from the surface. Despite any difficulties and lack of time, you are armed with patience and a tool. How to start?

There are two true ways. Let's look at them:

Chemical optionThe first method is chemical. A little expensive, in terms of the fact that you need to purchase special solvents in the store, work in a mask so that less harmful substances get into the respiratory tract, but this method is easier.
  • Chemistry for removing old paint or varnish is chosen depending on what kind of coating it is and how many years it has served faithfully. In this matter, you do not need to be a professor, just go to the sales assistant and get a convincing consultation.
  • If the seller is not very busy, he will even tell the whole process, from applying, to removing the old paint. With different chemistry, you should always work in protective equipment. Do not ruin your health, then to enjoy the look of beautiful furniture. In the same store, you will definitely be offered protection options, they will tell you how to use them.
ThermalThe next type of cleaning is thermal or thermal. It consists in the fact that the old is covered with furniture made of chipboard, they are well heated. Varnish or paint becomes fusible and is easier to remove with a tool. In this case, toxic compounds are also released, from which it is also necessary to have protective equipment.
  • An industrial hair dryer is used to heat the surface. Professional prices, although they are expensive, but have a temperature sensor and the possibility of its regulation. Of course, if you are not going to do this business professionally, then any cheap tool, even Chinese, will do.
  • We take this hair dryer, turn it on, thoroughly heats the chipboard and cleans it of the old coating. For this purpose, you will need any convenient construction spatula.
  • Another point - you do not need to burn large areas of the treated surface with a hairdryer, heat as much as you can process in a short period of time. Otherwise, the heat treatment procedure will need to be repeated. Then, gently putty on the cleaned side and sand it with sandpaper.
  • Such polishing work is necessary so that old flaws and material defects do not appear after applying new paint. Appreciate your work so that you don’t have to do the work again. Or call a specialist and pay him money for the job.

What paint is better to use when painting chipboard at home

How to paint chipboard? This can be done with various dyes, they are different in their composition and characteristics. Basically, professionals for painting chipboard always use enamel paints and varnishes.

  • Varnish is applied in those cases when they want to achieve a good color scheme, shade depth and gloss from the material. In addition to aesthetics, such a coating has another positive point - it protects the surface from external factors.
  • The range of colors is very diverse. These are: acrylic, alkyd, oil and epoxy. Most experts recommend that, to perform work at home, buy acrylic paint.

Caution: Best if it will be an aerosol type. Only in this case it is possible to achieve a qualitative result, because when spraying it gets evenly into all pores of the particleboard. The brush doesn’t work out that way.

Here are the reasons why acrylic is:

  • As mentioned above, in stores there is a very large assortment of this type of paint. There are even with a metallic effect, light reflecting, mother-of-pearl colors. You can choose hundreds of shades in any building materials store.
  • They are very convenient and impress with their ease of use. Here, special experience and serious skills are not required. Everyone can cope with work.
  • With the help of aerosol paints, ideal and even surfaces on chipboard are quite easily created. The surface does not look rough.
  • Another plus - they do not harm human health. You can work without protective equipment and dry sufficiently in a short period of time. 30 minutes are enough and the product does not get dirty.
  • Paint has good adhesion to all materials.. With regard to chipboard - too.
  • This type of paint is very durable. If you follow all the technology for working with it, then the product will not lose color for many years of use.

With the choice of paint - everything is clear. Now we need to clarify how to work with it so that the first pancake does not become lumpy.

Application of dye to chipboard

How to paint chipboard with your own hands now we will understand the details. The work is not difficult, but it’s better to go over this issue once again.

Caution: If you have a large amount of work, then it is best to use a spray gun for application. Its price is not so high, but you can quickly and efficiently apply the coating.

So:

  • If you have not disobeyed the advice and bought an aerosol type of paint, then immediately before applying it to the particleboard, you need to shake it well, especially if the paint has additional chemical elements (for example, fluorescent).
  • It must be applied evenly, otherwise there will be smudges. Work carefully so that you don’t have to redo the work. It is best to apply spray paint by laying the chipboard sheet horizontally, this will avoid the above problems.
  • If the sheet cannot be "laid" in a horizontal position, then you need to paint, evenly applying layer by layer, from top to bottom. You need to apply several layers, before the next painting, wait until the previous layer has completely dried. Pay special attention when painting sheet joints and corners. The task is not very difficult, but care and accuracy are required.
  • Now we proceed to such an autopsy, painted and dried chipboard. There should not be many layers of varnish, it all depends on its quality. In some cases, even one passage with such a composition is enough, in extreme cases, two. Why apply varnish on chipboard? We already talked about this - to protect the surface and color saturation.

How to paint a laminated particleboard and how to paint a chest of drawers from chipboard you will now understand. The preparation of the plane is important here. After all, the appearance and durability of the coating will depend on this. Therefore, take this issue responsibly.
