How to paint an iron door

How to paint an iron door and how to do it today we will consider in detail. First of all, we decide what to paint the iron door, because there are several options for this material. But it is worth paying attention that each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

After choosing, it will be necessary and correctly apply the dye. We will consider all these issues today. Also in the video in this article you can watch a lot of useful additional information.

Work Execution Rules

This work can be completely done with your own hands, then the price will not be high. The main thing is to first determine the design and choose a suitable dye. After that, you should never rush, but do everything consciously and in a timely manner. For this, the instruction below is proposed.

Getting ready to paint

Any construction process should begin with preparation. In this case, this means that before painting the surface, it must be thoroughly cleaned, wiped and dried.

So:

  • The peephole, the number of the apartment number and other decor elements must either be removed or taped;
  • If the painting of metal doors is performed a second time, then it is necessary to remove the last coat of paint. To do this, you can use varnish-soluble liquids, or you can clean everything with your hands or with a grinding machine, which will save a lot of time;
  • The product must be carefully inspected for rust. If it is present, then it is removed with a metal brush or acid, mixing, for example, lemon with vinegar. Irregularities present on the door are smoothed out using car putty (see Putty for metal: which one to choose);
  • The surface is ground again to a matte finish. This is necessary so that the paint goes better. The prepared door is degreased and a primer is applied. It will take about three to four hours for it to completely dry.

Types of paints

Many are interested in the question of how to paint a door made of metal. At the same time, its former appearance should not change and remain attractive for more than one year. There are a huge number of different compositions. Each of them has its pros and cons.

After weighing all this, you can easily stop at the appropriate option:

  • Nitro enamel gives the product extra beauty and shine, protects against corrosion. A jar with such a composition at the price is the cheapest, which affects its strength.
  • Nitrocellulose enamel It also serves not too long; it is extremely sensitive not only to chemical, but also thermal effects. Therefore, it best covers apartment doors. After painting, the product must be handled very carefully.
  • Alkyd enamel also makes the doors shine. She herself has more resistant properties to atmospheric or chemical influences, keeping them for four years. It contains alkyd resins, so it dries quickly enough and holds the original color for a long time.
  • Acrylic mixture is endowed with similar properties.. It is also non-toxic, as it is made on a water basis, dries quickly and is quite resistant. It should be noted graphite paint, which in addition to resistance to atmospheric precipitation, protects the metal from corrosion.
  • Most often powder paint can be seen at the front door. It is considered to be an expensive coating and is particularly resistant to ultraviolet rays.Antique paint gives the product an aged look. Of course, shades of silver and gold will look great in the interior, which is made in a classic style. The polymer is usually applied electrostatically, after which the product is placed in a special chamber, which is heated to two hundred degrees. Under these conditions, the polymer powder melts, subsequently inside the metal. Also, such material can be treated with car paint. The end result will look quite presentable. A similar composition is applied with a special spray gun or balloon, which is extremely convenient if you apply the picture through a stencil.

Attention: But there is one drawback - you cannot paint metal doors with powder paint by your own efforts, because the technology for performing work requires special equipment.

Hammering example
Hammering example
  • Hammer paint for iron doors most often used if the door is armored. She will give a tone that will be similar to the iron of a hammer, and a rough surface to create a unique style. Enamel has excellent resistance to mechanical damage, but is subject to moisture. Apply it with a spray gun. Do not forget that it can not be repaired. This means that it will not be possible to paint over any defects. Here it is necessary to completely remove the old layer and repaint again. Due to its high resistance to alkali, acids and other aggressive environments, epoxy paint can be used when painting doors in industrial or technical rooms. She is able to color all metals.

Having decided what exactly the front door will be painted on, it is necessary to understand some of the nuances of this process. After all, paint for an iron door will look and hold only as a result of proper application.

Staining rules

Painting the iron door is done in stages. Each stage is important in its own way. Nothing should be neglected here. All work performed in a complex will give a positive result.

Plane preparation

First you need to prepare the surface. After all, the quality and service life of the coating largely depends on this.

So:

  • All items that can be removed are deleted. If there is something that will not be painted (lining, glass and so on), carefully cover with masking tape and film;
  • Take a damp cloth and wipe the surface. If old grease stains are present on the door, then use acetone and white spirit to clean them. On sale there are also special tools designed to solve this problem;
  • If the door has already been painted, it is worth removing the entire old layer. If the surface has been used for more than a dozen years and there are traces of corrosion or rust on it, use washes or sandpaper to clean everything as it should;
  • As soon as you cope with this stage, you need to go all over the surface with an emery cloth or a metal brush, this will give maximum adhesion to the paint and door;
  • Before proceeding with direct painting, everything must be degreased. This is considered the key to successful work, and the paint will not fall off after a season;
  • In the event that there are any irregularities, chips and other defects, they must be putty. For this, the car mixture is the best fit. After that, we walk again with a fine emery cloth and wipe everything with a damp cloth;
  • You probably cannot wait to pick up a tool and start painting, but do not get ahead of yourself. There is another important point - the primer of the door. To do this, we take the simplest aerosol composition, but in the situation when there are patches of rust on the door, use a special primer.A well-treated surface will provide the most stable base for applying paint and extend the operational life;

Dye application

Now it is time to move on to the main and, perhaps, the most fascinating stage - coating the door with metal paint. Which composition to choose for this?

Today, aerosol acrylic enamels are considered the most popular formulations in the construction markets. They cost, in comparison with others, not too expensive, and provide some advantages:

Dye application
Dye application
  • Even an unprepared person can cope with this task;
  • Large selection of shades, as well as the presence of paints with special effects (hammer, pearl, metallic and much more);
  • Magnificent graspif the surface has been prepared properly;
  • Long service life and high-quality end result.

And now about the rules of painting:

  • Before you start spraying the door, you need to shake the container well so that the contents become a uniform consistency. Enough of twenty - thirty seconds. So that the paint does not create streaks, they paint the surface from top to bottom, applying a layer at a distance of up to thirty centimeters. It is important to ensure that the composition lies evenly, and all areas are painted the same quality;
  • Most often, metal doors are painted in several layers. Before applying the next layer, the previous one should dry out, it will take very little time (it all depends on whether you are doing the work outdoors or indoors, as well as the time of year). Do not perform work at minus indicators or in the rain. Once the final coat has been applied to the door, it must be left alone for several hours;
  • This is an additional step. If you want to make your door even more durable, add color to the shine and depth, you can apply acrylic varnish to the surface. An aerosol dries literally before our eyes;
  • After this, the painting process can be considered completed, now it remains to apply varnish and dry, install all the decorative elements that were removed earlier.

Attention! If you decide to cover the metal door with spray paint yourself, the room in which work is carried out should be well ventilated. Also, do not neglect personal protection.

Painting should be carried out in a dusty and clean room, in which there are no insects, because they may well spoil the freshly applied layer. Also, do not forget that if the top layer is already dry, this is not to say that the same thing happened inside. For the surface to completely dry, it will take at least six hours.

    I use acrylic paint for these cases. I like it in that the dirt and stains on it can be washed without a problem with ordinary water and soap. And the money for the whole event takes quite a bit

  2. Painting the door itself is not so complicated, the main hard work is to prepare the door for painting. For example, it took me 7 hours to prepare for painting the front door, I’ll say that I prepared all the tools and the place for the work itself.The result was impressive, the door was just perfect, completely removed all the old paint, processed the rust spots. Painting one side took 1 hour.
